From Sandra's Desk
Whoooeee! It has been HOT HOT HOT in every place but our dear Carmel and Carmel Valley. Don't get me wrong. It gets "hot" here, too, but not as consistently and for as long as in so many other locations near us…like the East Bay where my daughter lives …106? That's HOT! Of course, heat is good for grapes, too, as long as it is followed by cool nights and mornings (Yes in CV) and great afternoon breezes (and yes, we have those too in CV). Those are perfect conditions for the varietals we grow and sell. And we love it.
August is a fun month as we watch the grapes go from hard green balls to varying shades of purples, pinks, and translucent greens/yellows. August is also the beginning of the season of work for the vineyard workers and our wine maker, Frank. We bottle in late August, and before that we prepare for the harvest that comes in late August, September, and October.
Alan and I have been in Carmel Valley a lot this summer and we have seen a few of you in restaurants and out walking. Thank you for stopping to say hello. Don't mind my quizzical look as I try to get my aging brain in focus to remember your name. Just give me a shout. I'll get it…eventually….LOL!
Alan's movie schedule is picking up again. If you are interested, be on the lookout this fall for Robert Zemeckis' "Here" starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. It's a beautiful story and perspective on life as we all live it on this lovely planet earth. I think you will love it. Also, "Back to the Future the Musical" is coming to California! It opens on November 5th in Los Angeles and in mid-February in San Francisco. Tickets are on sale now.
That's it for August. I'd like to include a thank you to all of our employees who make this endeavor in our name possible…..Dave, Francisco, Frank, Marshall, Jose, Sabatino, Daniella, Andi and Elian….you guys are the best!!!! We are soooo lucky to have you!!!

From The Winemaker
Hi everyone,
Holy cow, school is back in session for the kids, grapes are netted (for protection against birds eating them), and the Giants aren't too far from a playoff spot, life is good. I have mentioned it here a plethora of times, the grape growing season mirrors the baseball season almost perfectly, and as baseball winds down through the dog days of summer, the vineyard is in the exact same scenario. For the vineyard this is the calm/ waiting before the storm. The chaos and joyous time of harvest is just around the corner, and we just got to get through this lull. Really not much different than getting through the regular baseball season to get to the playoffs. This year looks really good, been pretty hot so far and the crop is maturing as well as we could ask for. It's a smaller crop, tonnage wise, but after some really big years, a blessing. It will help the vineyards health to have a light year every once in a while. As always, we appreciate your continued support, without y'all we couldn't survive!!!
