HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? August already?!? It has not felt like summer yet, it cannot be almost over. I read somewhere that this has been the coldest summer in this area in 30 years!!! I believe it. Yes, I know Carmel is always cool in the summer but this year, even the valley has been downright chilly. Well, as we always say, wine growing and wine making is "FARMING, folks!" and everyone knows farming is very often out of our hands when it comes to the weather.
But it has been a lovely summer for hanging out in the tasting room and remembering summers past. And when Alan and I are not traveling for work or family, we spend time in the tasting room meeting you lovely people and enjoying the fruits of the vineyard. So please if you are in town, stop by and say Hello. We'd love to see you!
Alan and I are attending a few "Back to the Future in Concert" events this next month so if you live in an area where the concerts are on your local summer schedule, we'd love to say "Hi". From The Winemaker
Hey all, August is here. The grapes have started to turn color, the term is called veraison, a sign that harvest is on its way. As the grapes start to ripen (veraison being the "canary in the coal mine") the critters really start to get interested, especially the birds. When the birds start to pick away at the clusters of fruit we have to get our nets out. This requires us to wrap the vines with nets to protect from those dastardly birds. The last couple years a gargantuan flock of European Starlings has unfortunately made Carmel Valley home. If you don't net, they will absolutely eat every berry. At another ranch I run, I generally harvest around 12 tons of Pinot Noir annually. Last year we were only going to harvest around 4 tons, so that's all we netted. The Starlings proceeded to eat the other 8 tons really quickly! It was actually kinda scary how fast they decimated the vineyard. Amazingly, most vineyards do not use nets (way too expensive) but use cannons that shoot loud blanks, have speakers that imitate bird distress signals to scare them away or the cheapest and least invasive for your neighbors or sanity is a flashy ribbon tape that the wind blows around. All of these have some effectiveness, but the nets are by far the best. This year has been really cool out here on the West Coast so harvest will probably be delayed a bit, but of course, we never know. August, September and October might just bring the nicest weather and speed things up. We are known for beautiful fall weather so let's keep our fingers crossed.
