Walking through the vineyard yesterday to check out all of the pruning, I was struck by how absolutely beautiful this time of year is in Carmel Valley. I think it is because the vine canopy is so pervasive the rest of the year that when it is pruned back in the winter, the earth itself comes forward in our vision. The land in Carmel Valley is interesting with its various soil and rock combinations. I am not a geologist, but I love the different layers we see in our dirt. When we first investigated planting a vineyard, we spent time analyzing the soil and its angles and plateaus, as well as the weather and the seasonal temperatures, and then the "planners" collated all this information to determine the exact placement of the vines based on these factors. Now after 26 years (we planted in 2000 and had our first vintage in 2003) even this uneducated vineyard owner can appreciate what "terroir" is by walking through the vines. I see the deeper layers of soil where we planted a specific varietal and the rockier soil where another varietal was more fitting. We learned as we went along and we had to replant several times to adjust to conditions. Every move we make, brings us closer to our goal, the best representation of that varietal planted in our earth. We hope you agree…. things have gone very well.
On a different note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our friends and family for supporting our efforts to find a cure for type one diabetes. Several weeks ago, Alan and I were honored by the Northern CA Chapter of Breakthrough T1D for the 30 plus years of work we have done on behalf of cure research. You gave generously to the Gala and we want to thank you for the many ways that you have been there for the Silvestri Family. We are very appreciative of your support.
In closing I want to urge you to get outside and enjoy our glorious spring with the lupin and poppies and flocks of geese and little birds bringing new life into our world. We will be right there with you…walking in wonder.

From The Winemaker
Happy Daylight Savings Time? Lol...As someone who isn't the greatest sleeper in the world daylight savings isn't exactly the worst thing, but the sleepy eyes of the teenagers are for the birds. I actually love watching sunrise but the kids, not so much. So, without further ado Spring is here and we are now rolling into full farming mode. Tractors and equipment are serviced, weeds are being mowed down, and the vines are starting their annual journey to wine greatness, unbeknownst to them. Weird start here on the Central Coast of California. We had close to 10" of rain before the new year, that is amazing and fills us with so much joy and anticipation of a great rain year and then the summer of January came, no rain and plenty of mid 70 degree days. I know, I know, the rest of the country was freezing and so poor us and our beautiful weather but as someone who prays for rain and winter to be winter like, it was not great. Anyway, February came and we got hit with another 7" of rain in 5 days so we rejoiced again but now are back to some really nice weather. Woohoo. Baseball season has arrived and all is good on the home front. Positive vibrations through and through. Yes, I am very much aware that there is also very serious matters around the world but if I take every chaotic thing in the world to heart, life would be very downtrodden. So, Cheers to all the blessings and goodness there is out here in the world and raise a glass of something delicious in celebration of life well lived. The wines we have in rotation are all tasting amazing, so we hope everyone is enjoying them.
