From Sandra's Desk:
January!
Prokofiev and wine…a perfect pairing!
January is a month for cleaning out the old and bringing in the new. In the vineyard it signals the moment when the vines are fully asleep and ready for pruning. The same is true in the life of an artist. In the world of Alan Silvestri and his music, it is a time for revisiting his studio, reconfiguring his work space and visiting the masters of inspiration. This year it is Prokofiev. Alan is largely a self-taught artist. He has worked in his field since he was very young but his work has always grown through moments of revelation backed by his incredible work ethic, from the disco of Chips, to the jazz of Romancing the Stone, to the full orchestral score of Back to the Future or Forrest Gump and on and on. But whatever incarnations in film that he is asked to support, Alan's unique "voice" is always present in his work. We recently had a discussion where he was expressing his frustration in his inability to "see" Prokofiev's work even though he admires it tremendously. We finally came upon the answer through parallels in the winemaking process. Wine is a most special product in that it fully embodies the essence of the environment in which it grows while carrying forward the unique historical characteristics of each varietal. This is what is known as terroir. But terroir also exists in art. Like wine, art is a product of the time and place in which it is created and it is grown from the soil of each culture and moment in which it lives. Yes, there are moments of revelation and great leaps forward in art but it is also true that each movement in music is built on the work that has come before. Just as "No man is an island", no wine stands alone. Every bottle is a moment in time that has been grown from generations of plants and acquired knowledge. As we move into the new year we wish you all the time and space to refresh your perspective, to rest your vine, and to renew your inspiration.
Happiest of New Years!
Salute!

From the Winemaker:
Happy New Year!
It is really hard to believe that we are in 2016, it seems just a short time ago when the Flock of Seagulls hairdo was a thing and red zipper vests with one glove was super cool, maybe they still are, I will check in storage for the vest. Funny how time flies, I started in this business in 2000 and the trends, technology, etc. were so different. The winemaking I learned hasn't changed at all, same routine, same yeasts, same fermentation bins just a way bigger stomach and punch down tool. It's amazing to me what is now available technology wise. In this day and age the opportunity is out there to become amazingly hi tech and fancy, but do we really need the tech?, no, so I resist. I believe the old school approach has served me/us well and don't plan on changing anytime soon. I believe all art , whether it be culinary, enological, music, paints etc. has to come from hands formed with our energy our........ I guess love?
Now, not all wineries can operate this way, just the really small guys like us. I believe that is the real difference between the big guys and the micro wineries, the lack of soul in the wine. Some of the wines of those huge guys are ok but man, just the thought of the whole process being controlled by machines makes me cringe. Anyway, I guess my new mantra for the new year is more appreciation for small business, wineries, artists, etc. Cheers and we appreciate you appreciating us.

From The Tasting Room:
As we bid farewell to 2015, we also sadly say goodbye to the 2013 Red Ranger Syrah. We want to thank everyone for enjoying it with us over the past several months. But as sad as it is to see the end of a great wine, we are reassured by the fact that there is a fantastic 2014 vintage entering the final months in the barrel, and that it is scheduled for bottling sometime in the spring.
In the tasting room, however, our softer bodied 2013 estate Syrah continues to be poured and has become a favorite among many of our guests. This Syrah does not carry the Red Ranger name, but it certainly retains our signature rich flavor profile. It is a wonderful example of a slightly cooler climate style Syrah – showing notes of brighter red fruit, light smooth tannins and a touch of pepper on the finish.
Price:
Retail: $28.00
WC 15%: $23.80

We look forward to seeing all of you this coming year, and want to thank you again for making our tasting room a fun and special place to be.
Cheers,
Dorothea, Robin, Keith, Olivia and Sarah
