From Sandra's Desk:
June
June is a traditional month for celebrations...graduations and weddings....and the beginning of summer! In the vineyard it is the time of growth. Having survived the spring weather, the vines explode in greenery and following the flowering, tiny little buds appear. It's always exciting to see the next crop of grapes appear and this year after an early spring we were especially happy to see the little guys survive the threat of frost.
Our lives seem to always follow the path of the vineyard. After a vigorous travel schedule this year we will be staying close this summer while Alan begins work on his new film project, a Robert Zemeckis film, "Allied" scheduled for release next Thanksgiving. Summer on the coast means fog and cool temperatures so we will be finding our summer in the vineyard. We are looking forward to being closer to the grapes. The vineyard began as a retreat for us and this summer it will be the place we will once again find peace and sustenance after a long day of work.
We wish you all a wonderful month of celebrations and look forward to seeing you in the tasting room or around town.
Salute!

From the Winemaker:
Happy Summer everyone! School is out, days are long, and grapes are growing gangbusters. We thankfully made it through the spring without a frost, woohoo. The growing year 2016 is looking pretty good, it's been relatively cool but we have a great looking fruit set and crop load, so away we go. I think I say this every letter but does time fly or what?, I feel like harvest is coming like a freight train AND ITS ONLY JUNE! So this week I made a promise to myself to slow down, have that glass a wine and just breathe. Speaking of wine this time of year, with parties and bbq's, it's a great time to try new wines to branch out, "drink outside the box". So I challenge those of you who profess to only loving red or white wines, give your nemesis a try. Nothing is better on a hot day than a chilled beverage, I suggest wine as that beverage. A beautiful Chard, Pinot Gris or Rose is perfect for a hot day refresher/ stress reliever. As far as bbq's go we have 3 killer reds for any bbq,,, the Eugenia, Syrah or Barbera are fantastic for that beach bbq. Oh yeah, if you haven't heard, the 2014 Barbera is coming out soon and it may be in the top 5 wines I have ever made. We still have just a couple cases left of the '13, but when that is gone, look out, there is going to be a wine that is going to blow your mind.
Cheers, happy summer Frank

From The Tasting Room:
June gloom seems to be settling in here in Carmel-by-the-sea, but our tasting room is always a warm and welcoming place to spend some time out of the fog. But this fog has an extremely positive influence on our vineyard in the early morning hours, and it makes growing Pinot Noir in the valley possible. This cooling effect creates a long, cooler growing season that is beneficial to the grapes in two ways. First, it helps develop the rich and complex concentration of aromatics that we see from our Pinot Noir. Second, this cooling effect will promote acid retention in the grapes, adding to a bright vibrant finish that Monterey county wines have been celebrated for. So don't be sad the next time you head down to Carmel Beach and it is cold and cloudy. Instead, stop by our tasting room and grab a bottle of Pinot Noir to remind yourself that the fog is good, the fog is great…. And so is the wine!
Cheers,
Dorothea, Robin, Keith and Olivia
