We appreciate your patronage and hope to keep you up to date on the latest news from the vineyard and the tasting room, (with an occasional bite from Alan's musical efforts).

July and August

Welcome to tourist season! This is the time of year when we share our incredible peninsula with the world....and I do mean, THE WORLD! The restaurants are busy, the tasting rooms are full, and Point Lobos begins to look like an amusement park ride. But we must accept and understand that this is a special place, the Monterey Peninsula, and we can still appreciate and enjoy it while welcoming the world. The vineyard and tasting room are always a great interface for our family. We can watch the crowds and appreciate the business but also we can maintain our sense of wonder in our vineyard as we watch the tiny buds become fruit that finally yield a wonderful wine...a taste of Monterey as it has been called.

Alan's musical career has shot into hyperspace also so we take great joy in the process of wine making and grape growing while he spends long days creating amazing music. His latest assignments are with the best people in the business, Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, Marvels' The Avengers Infinity War, and Robert Zemeckis' Women of Marwencol. It's an exciting time in his career and as you can see from my photographs, also in the vineyard. The grapes seem to be having a blockbuster year, too.

We wish you all a fantastic "busy" season and also some time off to enjoy the beautiful Peninsula, maybe to even see it as a tourist sees it. It really is a very special place and we are all fortunate to live or visit here. Thank you again for your business and for your unbridled passion for our peninsula and for our Silvestri wines. We share your enthusiasm!

From The Winemaker:

I believe the fabled "dog days" of summer have arrived or at least started. Veraison, occurring when the grapes turn from green to red or gold for white grapes, is just starting and that means go time for the birds. That also means go time for bird netting being draped over the vines so we have something to harvest. Those dastardly birds can wreak havoc on a vineyard right quick. It's actually amazing to me that most vineyards do not have bird netting. Bird netting is really expensive from purchase to application. From closing the nets below the fruit zone (I use 4" wood skewers as opposed to the little plastic doodad that closes your bread bag) to taking the netting off after harvest. Most vineyards use different methods and others no method at all. Smaller vineyards that don't use netting will use squawk boxes (an amplifier emitting bird distress signals or the calls of birds of prey), falconers (guys or gals who actually have the birds of prey), or they use a system which sets off explosions periodically throughout the day. I have been to vineyards with the squawk boxes and bombs, the serenity and beauty of the vineyard is definitely affected. I'm fairly certain the birds get acclimated to the situation and then chatter about how silly the farmers are. The falconers on the other hand are super cool.

Oh yeah, I digressed, we were talking about the dog days. Once the grapes go through veraison we still have to water but the vineyard work should be mostly done. Now we must patiently wait for the grapes to ripen. This time is really the calm before the harvest storm. A time to prepare and get ahead of the game; like that ever happens. So cheers to the approaching fall season and the end of the dog days. I can't wait... Fall... For me, is my favorite time of the year.

From The Tasting Room:

With the weather as beautiful as it has been lately, it's hard to imagine a better place in the world to be. Just as a reminder, we always have our delicious white wines cold and ready at the tasting room for you to grab and enjoy at the beach or by the pool. Our wine always seems to pair nicely with some sunscreen and a towel.

The Barbera is back on the tasting menu!

We are once again pouring our 2014 Barbera daily in the tasting room. Our small block of Barbera, which is the only grown, produced and bottled Monterey County Barbera, was added to the vineyard to honor the Silvestri family heritage going back to the Piedmont region of Northwestern Italy. Our Barbera grapes are planted on a warm southern facing slope, allowing this varietal to mature and ripen to its fullest potential before harvest. With the influence of French oak barrel fermentation and maturation our Barbera exudes a deep richness and complexity that helps balance the grape's high acidity.
Rich, deep blueberry and blackberry flavors explode from the glass. From nose to palate the flavors go deeper with a bold roundness and a velvety finish that doesn't seem to want to end.
