The picturesque village of Carmel (Carmel-by-the-Sea is the traditional name) is not associated with wine. This postcard Coastal California town is known for high-end hotels, art galleries, white sand beaches, and being the neighbor to Monterey, yet grapes have been planted here since 1983, and Carmel Valley is home to vineyards and a number of winery tasting rooms. A recent addition to the Carmel wine scene is Silvestri and I adore their 2009 Syrah ($18). With a vineyard located a scant 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the Carmel Valley, Alan Silvestri (yes, the film composer who scored films like Castaway, The Polar Express, Forrest Gump and a personal favorite of mine and very funny movie, Mouse Hunt) has a small winery doing big things. This Syrah is loaded with oak, dusty cocoa, black cherry, blackberry and black pepper, and this fills out the mouth with acidity, chalky tannins, and juicy flat-out flavor. And you will not find a better price point to quality ratio than what Silvestri is making with their current vintage. It's cool to be surprised in life ands this is one of those out-of-the-blue things I discovered when I was in Monterey County on an in-depth wine tour. There are a mere 200 cases made of this baby and it ain't widely distributed. Drink, enjoy, repeat and you won't be singing the blues.
