Welcome, February 2023…Goodbye January 2023.

I know that we are not alone in saying farewell to the stormy days of January 2023. "BYE BYE ….And don't let the door hit you on the way out." LOL. It was DEFINITELY wonderful to receive the gift of rain but WHOA! Some of us received WAY too much of that gift. We hope that you and your family survived the storms and that you are on your way to recovery. At Silvestri Vineyards, we were honored to be able to assist our neighbors who needed to evacuate their horses from the river area. They didn't stay long but it was comforting for all to be safe during a scary time. Thanks to Marshall who helped us prepare for their arrival and who kept vigil throughout their stay.

February is traditionally a quiet time in the vineyards. There's pruning and plowing to be done but the wine is in the barrels and the vines are resting. The tasting room is also a little quieter until the AT&T and Valentine's Day arrives. It's perfect time to enjoy our knowledgeable staff and some Silvestri wine.

As for Alan's career, he is as busy as ever. "Back to the Future the Musical" opens on Broadway in early July and as usual he is busy working on next year's film scores. It's never "quiet" in the Silvestri home.

Finally, we hope all of YOU are enjoying the quiet AFTER the storm and that we will see you in the tasting room again soon. Until then…

From The Winemaker

Hi All, Happy February!!!
So, just like last month the winery is pretty quiet, but we are starting to get after it in the vineyard. Tilling, sowing seed to the middle of the vineyard rows, dealing with weeds and gophers, and trying to time pruning so that during post-pruning there are no open wounds susceptible to the rain. Why is that important ? Well, there is a bad guy in the rain and wet weather called Eutypa. Eutypa is a wind born pathogen that will infect freshly cut wood, and over time, it will kill that wood. It's also known as "dead arm". It's really a bummer to have a beautifully trained grape vine and then all of a sudden you start to see some dead wood slowly progressing towards the main stalk of the vine. What you can do if this happens is to start cutting back the cordon. The telltale sign is a pie-shaped, "pizza slice" dead part in the midst of living tissue. Or you can remove the vine completely. The worst thing that could happen is a pruning crew going from vine to vine spreading disease. "Keep those pruners clean!" is the mantra. Anyway, our vineyard is very clean. Thanks to Marshall, Santiago and Jose, who do a great job out there, busting their butts to provide the best grapes, which of course, hopefully produces great wines. And thanks to you, our customers, for your continued support. Silvestri Vineyards is a small producer and your support and continued loyalty keep the ball rolling, so THANKS!!!
