From Sandra's Desk
February 2024
Happy Valentine's Day, Presidents Day, AT&T…and wait minute…STORMS?!?
When I first wrote this piece for this newsletter, it was a few days before the recent storm onslaught. Who could have known that within days we would be suffering downed trees and flooding and sitting in cold houses waiting for the power to come back on? I'm sorry if you find yourself in one of those places. Having done it for many years, I can sympathize. It's really only "fun" for 24 hours but after that, it's NOT FUN! But hang in there everyone. Our wonderful first responders will have us all up and running soon. And thank heavens for the hard workers who make electricity and its attendant blessings possible. Here! Here! To those heroes.
Now back to my little February love letter to you all…..
February brings much needed visitors to the Monterey Peninsula. We locals may grouse and complain about the traffic, the bad drivers, the crowded restaurants but let's be honest…. We LOVE the company, especially if you are in the hospitality business. After a quiet January, we all look forward to a little "company". The weather is good, even with the occasional rain storm, and the sunsets are spectacular. The surf pulls the sand away from the beach and we are answering the visitors' question, "Will the sand ever return?" Yes, it will return. This is one of the wonderful things about living here on the peninsula. We have seasons. And the vineyards love seasons. They work hard all year long and they rest in the fall and winter. But soon there will be pruning and small buds and we will return to the life- reaffirming- warmth of California. So, welcome the changes of the season, including the ebb and flow of the tourists and the visitors. We are blessed to share them both with all of you. Happy February!
Salute,
Sandra

From The Winemaker
Happy February all! Hoping everyone is safe out there. As I am writing this we are in the midst of that pretty substantial storm and while I am always grateful for as much rain as possible, I can do without the hurricane force winds. Some great news in the winery is the 2023 vintage, in its entirety, (we have 13 singular groups of wines that are on their own schedules....for instance we don't just have Syrah, we have 12 barrels of an upper vineyard Syrah, 6 barrels of what is usually the Red Ranger Syrah and 6 barrels of what is the Syrah), all fermented separately and on their own timeline are finished. Hooray! What that long explanation means is to reiterate how great it is that all the different lots of wines we have all finished the secondary fermentation, the conversion of malic acid to lactic acid, or malolactic fermentation, and are ready for chilling and aging. The malolactic fermentation requires the wines to be warm, above 60 degrees so I am always freaked out until they are done. Having talked to some "old world" winemakers, they have a more cavalier approach and don't expect the secondary fermentation to be finished until the spring...that is nuts to me but as they say, there are a million ways to skin a donut, or something like that. So, all is well, and now we look forward to farming this year's crop. Stay safe everyone!!! Thank you for the continued support, it is greatly appreciated.
Cheers Frank
