From Sandra's Desk
Big news from all fronts! Most importantly, the Silvestri family is expecting a new member in the fall. James (Il Campione) and his wife, Ashley, have one in the nest!! I say "nest" because all around us in the vineyard are the signs of new life. We have baby geese in the pond, baby owls in the barn, other baby birds poking out and chirping from their nests. Yesterday, I found an abandoned hummingbird nest on the ground. The plentiful water and sunshine has everyone out enjoying life here. As you can see from my photos, the vineyard is in near full bloom as well. It's exciting!
Alan is also back to work. He has just completed "Here" from Robert Zemeckis and is deep into writing music for "Electric State" with the Russo Brothers. At the end of every day, we go to one of Carmel's many fantastic restaurants and enjoy a glass of our own wine. Yes, we pay retail. We appreciate the support the restaurants have shown us and our small vineyard here in Carmel, so we say thank you in this small way. Be sure to check out our list of local restaurants when you stop by our tasting room.

From The Winemaker
Hi all,
I hope everyone is starting to wind down on the wintery weather. We enjoyed, what is probably our last shot of rain, just under an inch last Saturday. The next ten days calls for mid 70's, woohoo, spring sun is finally here. As many of you know, here in the central coast of California, we get no summer rain, just like most Mediterranean climates worldwide. This means we soon will start to irrigate the vineyard. Watering grape vines is a bit trickier than let's say a rutabaga. You want to give them enough water early to promote growth, but don't want to overwater creating giant clusters, unless of course you are selling those grape clusters to Whole Foods. The Silvestri Vineyards have ample water supply, but we are very diligent about the environment and riparian habitat around us, so we are very conservative with watering. We generally will water till about a month before harvest, of course all of the watering decisions have lots of factors like rain total for the year, weather (whether it's cloudy and cool or gonna be a scorcher) and old school intuition ie: reading the vines to SEE how their health/growth patterns are doing. So, we are close to starting that part of the growing season. At this point it's been a lot of weed control, suckering shoots coming from below the cordon, and shoot thinning. Our vines are on a 2 bud spur program. What that means is you would take a cane from last year and prune it so there are only 2 opportunities for shoots to form for this year's canopy. Then there should be a space about a fist size then another 2 bud spur, etc, until the vine ends, about 3' away. Shoot thinning requires working with every vine to eliminate any shoots that are not part of that system, arduous, YES, necessary...absolutely, if you are looking for quality. To help with the visualization, we are just under 16 acres with about 1,000 vines per acre, takes quite a bit of time and help from outside labor to get that done in a timely fashion. Anyway, that is what we are up to at the moment, all the wines are tasting great, the sun is shining, and hopefully the Giants can score some runs!
