From Sandra's Desk
Whoa! Watch those national temperatures and understand WHY we all choose to live in this magnificent place. Not only the natural beauty but that incredible Pacific Ocean that keeps us cool when most other places are cooking. The temperate climate also gives us our spectacular pinot noirs, syrahs, and chardonnays. So, cheers for the Pacific Ocean and please support efforts to keep it beautiful and healthy.
With the success of the Back to the Future the Musical in London, Broadway, and now the US Tour, Alan and I have been spending this summer in the vineyard. We have a front row seat to the changes that the seasons bring. We have watched a family of geese hatch and grow in our vineyard pond. We've seen the baby owls mature and leave the safety of our barn. But one of the best sights is watching the vineyard blossom and grow. It's one of our favorite things, to take walks and rides through the vines. Soon the hard work begins for Frank and Marshall, of bottling and harvesting. And I'm excited because THIS year we will be here for it.
I hope you all are staying cool and healthy. If you see us out and about, please say "Hi". We love meeting you all.
Til then…
Salute!
Sandra

From The Winemaker
Happy July!!!
This time of year is so great. I really love fall the most but the 4th of July specifically holds so many great memories, gratitude for our great nation and lots and lots of hot dogs! Of course, with the summer being in full effect really hot days generally start to show up. This week we are looking at high 90's and 100 degree temps, not so out of the ordinary but certainly something we don't deal a lot with. So, how does that effect the vineyard/ grapes, well, glad you asked. There are so many decisions on a year to year, week to week, day to day basis and of course, if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. In preparation for the possibility of an excessive heat wave we held off on leaf pulling (pulling leaves away from the fruit zone of our canopy, opening up the zone to alleviate mildew pressure), maintained a watering program so the vines aren't sweating out more water than it's taking in. In an excessive heat situation, the vines will steal water from the fruit to survive, abandoning its fruit for the vine's survival, and last is to not spray the vineyard when the temps exceed 85 degrees. You can burn leaves if you spray when it's too hot and/ or what you are spraying evaporates and you are wasting time, money, and protection from Mildew. Anyway, Happy 4th and stay cool.
-Frank
